Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, the “Museum Hotel of Japan Beauty”, is holding a special event in commemoration of the 90th anniversary year of the hotel. The “Hyakudan Kaidan Exhibition – Glory of Japanese Art” runs from Thursday 29 November until Monday 24 December 2018 at Hyakudan Kaidan, a historical wooden building on the hotel site. The iconic building has been designated a Tangible Cultural Asset of Tokyo.
Hyakudan Kaidan was built in 1935 and is the only wooden building still remaining at the hotel. The building gets its name from the long, 99-step staircase that connects its seven former banquet rooms. Known as the “Temple of Art”, the building has hosted various exhibitions in recent years, featuring Japanese-style painting by Kiyokata Kaburaki and Jippo Araki, and many pieces of sculpture, architecture and craft works by renowned artists. This time the exhibition will showcase the charms of the Hyakudan Kaidan building itself.

During the event, commentary on artworks will be provided using hi-tech Motion Graphics. “In the Still Night”, a short film set in the hotel, will be screened during the exhibition period. The film was first released in Paris at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo’s “A Museum Hotel of Japan Beauty” event in November.
In addition to the regular daytime exhibition, the venue will be open in the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays as the “Night Museum”. Guests at the Night Museum will receive a drink ticket which can be redeemed in hotel restaurants. Other activities include guided tours of the Hyakudan Kaidan building, lunch and dinner plans, and accommodation plus exhibition and dinner plans.
Enjoy this opportunity to see the Hyakudan Kaidan during this limited-time special event.
